Why We Give
Giving is not merely an Old Testament obligation—it is a New Testament privilege and act of worship. The Apostle Paul teaches us that giving is an expression of grace, rooted in the heart, and motivated by love.
In 2 Corinthians 9:7, Paul writes: “Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” This is the foundation of New Testament giving—not a fixed percentage, but a cheerful, generous, and willing heart.
While the Old Testament tithe (a tenth) was part of the law, the New Testament emphasizes proportional giving based on what God has prospered you [citation:5]. Paul encouraged the Corinthians to set aside a sum of money “in keeping with” their income (1 Corinthians 16:2). This means every believer gives according to their means, and those who have been blessed much are called to give much (Luke 12:48).
“Each one should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not out of regret or compulsion. For God loves a cheerful giver.”
